The building previously known, as the Old Porters Lodge was a single storey dwelling attached to the southern end of Bedford Park Mansions in Turnham Green, West London. The mansion block, which was built in 1900, was the first of its kind to be established in the area. To maintain consistency with the surrounding architecture it was constructed externally in the Queen Anne style popular in the late 19th century – featuring red brick, terra cotta reliefs, Dutch gables and crenulated parapets.
Urban Studio were recently commissioned to carry out the extensive remodelling of the property including building an additional storey.
Although not listed the site is surrounded by Grade 2 listed properties. Because of this the redevelopment of the building was subject to conservation planning and consents.
Step inside and the result is breath taking in its simplicity. All of the spaces have been opened up and flow effortlessly for the entire length and height of the property. Discreet shadow gaps allow the walls to float between the ceilings and floor.
A simple steel spiral staircase provides access to the upper level providing additional daylight from skylights above. Light penetrating through the perforated steel treads on the staircase creates a dappled effect on the floor. The visual effect that it creates brings a unique quality to the space.
Walls, ceilings, fixtures and fittings are all finished white. Furniture has been kept to an absolute minimum. There is no superfluous clutter and no ornamentation apart from two stunning set piece sculptures.
Dinesen Douglas Fir flooring has been used throughout. It brings the natural beauty of timber to life and warmth and softness to the scheme.
The scheme that won the “International Property Awards category for the best UK residential interior” is a demonstration of the ethereal quality of minimalist design.
